The first photo is of the flower centered and the second one is using the rule of thirds. I think both photos are really nice, however I like the second one better because both flowers aren't dead center, but follows the rule of thirds. After taking several photos and trying to decide which ones to use, it occurred to me that every object doesn't have to be in the center, and that by using the rule of thirds, photos may not only look better, but can also be more powerful and have a deeper meaning (I couldn't figure out how to keep them side-by-side....sorry!).
Nice pictures of the flowers. I had a hard time with putting the pictures side by side also. I had to do it twice.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why we take so many pictures centered is because that is how we tend to look at things. When we want to point something out to someone, we point at it and it becomes the focus of our attention and our vision.
ReplyDeleteAs a photographer, it is your job to now be a storyteller. If you try to tell a story and it is only about describing the main character or object without context, then it is boring. Once you place the character off to the side, just a bit, and include some dynamics like background and possibilities of movement, then you are really telling a better story.
I love pictures that aren't centered, although i always center them. I think your photos are great, i like the second more as well
ReplyDeleteI think when a subject is off centered, we have to work just a little more to look at it. Our eyes have to move across the page to find what we are supposed to see, whereas when the subject is directly in the middle we see that and we're done. There isn't much else to look for.
ReplyDeleteI like both of these shots. The one where the white flower is off-centered offers a little more to look at. Good job.
ReplyDeleteKevin, thanks for pointing out that rationale for no center the subject. That makes great sense. This will help me if I really think about the story I'm trying to tell. Sometimes you want that subject to be front and center, other times you need to see what else is going on. Very nice.
